.22 Pistol
The .22 Pistol is probably the first loot item you'll acquire in Mafia Wars. It is only useful when you are beginning the game because it isn't all that powerful and you'll soon be able to get much better weapons. The .22 Pistol drops in Street Thug tier when doing the job 'Beat Up Rival Gangster.

Do a Google search for your local politician's name followed by the words 'Blackmail Photos.' Alright, that's completely off-topic, but still fun! Anyhow, Blackmail Photos are required to do other jobs later in Mafia Wars, so you'll find yourself coming back to grab more. Bodyguards
Bodyguards are an excellent way to add defense to your mob boss in Mafia Wars, and they're completely free since they are a loot item. Stock up on them as they can continue to come in handy in later levels of the game. It can only be acquired by getting it in a special drop (unless someone gifts it to you, but you generally need many of these). So, where do you get the Falsified Documents? Federal Agent

Firebomb
Firebombs are helpful early on in the game because they increase your power by 4 and defense by 2, an interesting ratio of 2 to 1. Grenade launcher
Now what self-respecting mafia member would be caught without a Grenade Launcher? None! You can loot the Grenade Launcher in the Hitman Tier by completing the 'Repel the Yakuza' job.
Humvee
The Humvee is an excellent loot item because it has a very high defense level. So, where do you get the Humvee? You can loot the Humvee in the Underboss tier by completing the job 'Break Into The Armory'. Before some changes this use to loot as "HUMVEE"

Illegal Transaction Records
Be prepared to be going back plenty of times to get more Illegal Transaction Records in Mafia Wars. You'll need them to complete a couple of jobs within the game. And yes, it will be boring and annoying when you have to spend all of your energy looking for them. You can loot Illegal Tranaction Records in the Capo Tier by completing the 'Steal Bank Records' job.

Night Vision Goggles
OK, these sound super-cool right? Well, truth be told you should try to limit how many Night Vision Goggles you loot. They're stat bonuses aren't that good and you can't get rid of them, so just take the ones you get and move on. If you don't have any you can get them in the Hitman Tier by completing the 'Assassinate a Political Figure' job.

Phone Bomb
The Phone Bomb is a special loot item in Mafia Wars. The only way to get the Phone Bomb is to install the Mafia Wars iPhone application on your iPhone and link it to your Facebook Mafia Wars. Note: The iPhone version of Mafia Wars does not currently communicate with the Facebook version, the linking of the two (Mafia Wars for iPhone and Mafia Wars on Facebook) is a one time process. All it does is gives you the iPhone Bomb on the Facebook version, and brings your number of Mafia members over to the iPhone version. The Phone Bomb has 27 Attack and 18 Defense. Police Cruiser
These are nice to add to your collection. The Police Cruiser comes fully loaded with coffee and donuts. You can loot Police Cruisers in the Boss Tier by completing the 'Blackmail the District Attorney' job.

Porsche 911 (GX9)
Gangsters like fast women and fast cars! I can't help you with the women, but I can tell you where to loot the Porsche 911 in Mafia Wars. You can get the Porsche 911 in the Consigliere Tier by completing the 'Ransom a Businessman's Kids' job.
Private Jet
Aside from being just plain cool (you get it? plane / plain), the Private Jet is also required for a job in Mafia Wars. You can get a Private Jet in the Boss Tier by completing the 'Make a Deal with the Mexican Cartel' job.

Prop Plane
I used to think the Prop Plane was a really useful loot item, turns out it just happened to be a coincidence. (A lot of people that I lost to had several of these.) I don't lose all that much anymore, but I don't attribute that to the Prop Plane. Just get the ones you need and move on. You can loot Prop Planes in the Capo Tier by completing the 'Steal an Air Freight Delivery' job.
